Man arrested for fitting fake number plate to dodge traffic fines in Hyderabad

Hyderabad Traffic Police have apprehended a man for affixing a fraudulent registration plate to his vehicle in a bid to circumvent traffic enforcement and associated penalties.
The suspect, Md. Khayyum, 46, hailing from Manneguda in Pudur mandal, was taken into custody by Chengomul Police in Vikarabad district following a coordinated investigation. Officers discovered that Khayyum had fitted his vehicle with fake registration number AP28DK4592, while the legitimate registration for the vehicle was AP28AZ1087.
By using the counterfeit plate, the accused managed to evade traffic challans. However, the scheme resulted in traffic violations being incorrectly attributed to the actual owner of vehicle number AP28DK4592, a resident of Dood Bowli in Hyderabad.
Authorities have registered a criminal case under FIR No.114/2026 at Chengomul Police Station. The accused faces charges under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) read with Section 80(a) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Additionally, a notice has been issued to him under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The breakthrough came through joint efforts between Hyderabad Traffic Police and Chengomul Police, who utilised CCTV footage and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems to detect the violation.
Traffic authorities have reiterated that the use of forged, identical, or altered number plates constitutes a serious criminal offence under existing legislation. The police have called upon the public to report any suspected misuse of vehicle registration details via the e-Challan platform, email, or their WhatsApp helpline.
