A team of researchers at VIT Bhopal University, working alongside collaborators from multiple institutions, has created an intelligent remote monitoring system aimed at transforming how pulmonary fibrosis—a debilitating progressive lung condition—is tracked and managed. The system has received an Indian Utility Patent, underscoring the institution's commitment to developing healthcare innovations grounded in technology.

Pulmonary fibrosis involves the permanent scarring of lung tissue, progressively restricting breathing capacity and diminishing patients' quality of life. The disease presents a significant clinical challenge, as physicians typically depend on infrequent hospital consultations and routine clinical evaluations to assess how the condition is advancing and whether treatments are working effectively.

To bridge this monitoring gap, the research team developed the "Apparatus for Dynamic Monitoring and Analysis in Pulmonary Fibrosis," a system capable of continuously gathering and processing clinical information about patients. The technology enables healthcare providers to observe disease progression in real time, identify opportunities for earlier intervention, refine therapeutic approaches, and deliver more customized, evidence-based patient care.

The patent was granted under Indian Patent No. 588547, following Patent Application No. 202421039574, which was filed on 21 May 2024 and approved on 7 May 2026.

The development team comprises Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Patel and Dr. Siddharth Singh Chouhan from VIT Bhopal University's School of Computer Science and Engineering, alongside Dr. Nancy Kumari, formerly a researcher at VIT Bhopal and now affiliated with SRM University Delhi-NCR, Dr. Krishna Kumar Pandey from NIT Agartala, and Amit Patel and Sunil Kumar Gautam from MANIT Bhopal.

The system is engineered for integration into modern healthcare infrastructure, with potential use cases spanning patient monitoring across different settings, clinical decision-making tools, remote healthcare provision, telemedicine platforms, assessment of treatment effectiveness, studies of respiratory conditions, and individualized respiratory disease management. By facilitating long-term analysis of patient information, the platform aims to furnish clinicians with actionable insights that strengthen disease management outcomes.

Ms. Kadhambari S. Viswanathan, Assistant Vice President at VIT Bhopal University, commented on the achievement: "This patent demonstrates our commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research at VIT Bhopal.
