Kerala Startup Launches India's First Solar-Powered RV, Positioning Itself at Forefront of Sustainable Tourism

Calicut-based Rowster, a newly established tourism-technology venture, has unveiled India's inaugural solar-powered electric recreational vehicle — a development that could reshape how travellers experience Kerala's renowned landscapes.

The vehicle, constructed atop a Mahindra Veero XXL platform, functions as a fully self-contained mobile cabin. Its defining feature is a 1.3 kilowatt-peak rooftop solar installation paired with a 10-kilowatt-hour battery system, enabling the cabin to operate entirely on solar energy. Notably, the RV can be legally driven using a standard car driving licence, eliminating the need for specialised permits.

Rowster holds recognition from both Startup India and the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), positioning itself within the state's growing innovation ecosystem. The prototype has already generated substantial institutional interest across Kerala's government apparatus. Five senior state officials — including the Ministers for Industries and Artificial Intelligence, Home Affairs, Higher Education, and the Kozhikode Member of Parliament — have personally examined the vehicle, alongside KSUM's Chief Executive.

The timing aligns with Kerala's tourism sector reaching unprecedented heights. The state welcomed 2.58 crore visitors during 2025, marking its strongest year on record. Domestic tourism surged more than 12 percent compared to the previous year, while 2024's tourism revenue reached approximately ₹45,000 crore. Previously underperforming districts — Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Thrissur — are now experiencing the fastest growth trajectories within the state.

Government investment reflects this momentum. Kerala's current budget allocates over ₹400 crore toward tourism development, with KSUM collaborating on a new hospitality and innovation centre. Caravan tourism infrastructure has been specifically identified as a priority initiative, creating an institutional framework that favours ventures like Rowster.

According to Rowster's founder Sharhabeel Parambil, the venture addresses a gap in Kerala's tourism offering. "Kerala has perfected the destination — backwaters, hill stations, wellness retreats. What Kerala hasn't had yet is the journey itself, reimagined as a sustainable, solar-powered experience," he stated.

The environmental mathematics underpin the sustainability claims. At Kerala's average solar intensity of approximately five peak-sun-hours daily, the cabin's rooftop array generates roughly five kilowatt-hours per day, or approximately 1,825 kilowatt-hours annually. Using the Central Electricity Authority's grid emission factor of 0.710 kilograms of CO₂ per kilowatt-hour for 2024–25, each vehicle prevents roughly 1.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions yearly — power that would otherwise derive from grid electricity or diesel generators.

The solar-powered RV concept extends Kerala's existing Responsible Tourism philosophy, which operates through thousands of grassroots, predominantly women-led initiatives. A mobile solar cabin requires no new land acquisition or construction while generating its own renewable power during operation.

The vehicle enables a new travel model: visitors can undertake self-directed journeys linking Wayanad, Munnar, and the backwaters without relocating between accommodations. Extended stays translate into increased spending at locally-operated homestays, restaurants, and community tourism ventures.
